More Lava Stories and Pictures from the 2018 Eruption
Beautiful view of Fissure 17 and the Southern Cross from our yard at Polestar!
Fissure 17
Fissure 17 was at the end of all Kilauea’s line of vents and the one closest to us. It was a little less that a mile from us and the lava that erupted from it flowed in the opposite direction from us.
For 3 weeks in May of 2018, it erupted with huge loud explosions that shook our windows while earthquakes were shaking the ground beneath us. It also erupted huge fountains of glowing red lava that went 300 to 400 feet in the air and we could see it night or day. The National Guard even came out to see it.
It eventually built a large cinder cone that was and is still visible above the tree line. You can read more about Fissure 17 HERE because the lava that erupted from it turned out to be special.
